As an Occupational Therapist, I can’t help but be aware of
movement and postures and how they manifest from motivations and opinions. Confident, defeated, overloaded, or excited,
our mind tells our body what to do and our body language tells all. It is estimated that body language accounts for 55% of face-to-face communication.
“All to Thee, my bless'd Savior, I surrender all”— by Judson W. Van DeVenter
These world renowned lyrics have been professed by every
English speaking Christian in the Western Hemisphere. The words we say account for 7% of communication. The Bible claims our bodies host the Holy
Spirit of God in 1 Corinthians 6:19. On the
mat, I find deeper postures and awareness of my body through surrender. Since the Holy Spirit lives in each
individual Christian, perhaps we should consider surrender in biomechanical
terms? The more in touch, open and flexible I am in
my body, the more in touch, open and flexible I am to God within me. More flexibility brings more grace in my
face-to-face body language communication.
Let’s not host our bless’d Savior
with myofacial adhesions, but surrender all towards flexibility and openness.
